Privacy Policy
Effective 9 October 2026 · Hayat by Human Development Fund
Hayat is built to be private by default. The app has no user accounts, shows no advertising, and does not track you across other apps or websites. This policy explains the little that does leave your device, and why.
What stays on your device
Your profile (name and city), prayer calculation settings, dhikr and tasbih counts, bookmarks, and cached content are stored only on your device. Prayer times and the Qibla direction are computed locally. Your precise GPS coordinates are used on the device for these calculations and are never transmitted to us or anyone else.
You can erase all of this at any time with Settings → Reset, or by uninstalling the app.
What leaves your device
Usage analytics (Mixpanel)
To understand which features help people, the app sends anonymous usage events — for example that the prayer times screen was opened or a dhikr session was completed — to Mixpanel, our analytics processor. These events include a random identifier created for your installation (not your name or any account, because none exists) and may include the city you chose for prayer times, but never your precise location.
Because Hayat is an app for Muslim worship, usage events are by nature connected to religious practice. We treat them accordingly: they are not used for advertising, are never sold, and are not shared with anyone beyond the processor that stores them for us.
Crash reports (Sentry)
If the app crashes or encounters an error, technical details (device model, operating system version, and what the app was doing) are sent to Sentry so we can fix the problem. Crash reports are not linked to your identity.
Events and campaigns
When the app loads community events or campaigns, it contacts Human Development Fund servers like any website would; standard connection data (such as your IP address) is processed to deliver the content. Opening an event ticket link takes you to the organiser’s site (for example Eventbrite), which has its own privacy policy.
Device permissions, and what they are for
- Location (while using the app): computes prayer times and the Qibla direction on your device. Optional — you can type a city instead.
- Camera: powers the optional augmented-reality Qibla view only. Nothing is recorded or stored.
- Notifications and exact alarms: deliver prayer reminders at the precise minute.
- Background audio: keeps adhkar recitations playing when you switch apps.
Data retention and deletion
On-device data is yours and disappears when you reset or uninstall the app. Anonymous analytics and crash data are kept only as long as needed to improve the app. To request deletion of analytics associated with your installation, email jamiu@hdfund.org and we will handle it with our processors.
Third-party processors
We use two processors, strictly on our behalf: Mixpanel (usage analytics) and Sentry (crash reporting). Neither is permitted to use your data for their own purposes.
Children
Hayat is intended for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
